Bogatyr Garlic

Bogatyr Garlic (Allium sativum var. ophioscorodon Bogatyr) is a hardneck Marbled Purple Stripe garlic variety known for its large bulbs wrapped in glossy purple skins. Each bulb generally contains four to six plump cloves with a robust, spicy, and slightly smoky flavour. Its upright, blue-green foliage reaches 50 to 70 cm in height before turning yellow at maturity. Extremely hardy to Zone 2, it performs particularly well in northern climates. Productive and reliable, it provides a generous harvest of bulbs that can be stored for several months when properly cured.

Plant the cloves in fall with the pointed end facing upward, approximately 5 cm deep, spacing them 10 to 15 cm apart and leaving 30 cm between rows. Grow them in full sun in loose, fertile, organically rich, and perfectly drained soil. An application of well-aged compost before planting supports bulb development, while excessive nitrogen unnecessarily promotes foliage growth. Water lightly after planting, then moderately during active growth without saturating the soil. Reduce watering before harvest and remove the flower scapes to encourage the formation of larger bulbs.

Bogatyr garlic is ideal for family vegetable gardens, food gardens, edible flower beds, and large, well-drained containers. It grows well alongside carrots, beets, lettuce, strawberries, and tomatoes while helping deter certain pests. Its young flower scapes are edible and delicious in stir-fries, pesto, and marinades; when left on the plant, their flowers may also attract pollinators. The cloves add wonderful flavour to grilled meats, stews, sauces, and roasted vegetables. Harvest the bulbs when approximately half of the foliage has turned yellow, then cure them in a dry, well-ventilated location.
